Writing Workshop
Facilitated by: Will Meecham, M.D., M.A.
Few people have childhoods without pain, despite our cultural myth that growing up should be an epoch of happiness and healthy instruction by our guardians. Addictions of all sorts, misguided rearing practices, and misfortune all-too-often lead to upbringings that fall short of the ideal. Our early traumas then stay with us throughout life. We all have potential to become wiser and more textured people because of our hardships. However, attaining that perspective and maturity often takes conscious effort, hard work, and time. Those badly buffeted in early years may require professional assistance.
Writing can help. Artists often find their pain informs their work, and writers throughout history have mined their sorrow for inspiration. In the process, they grow to understand themselves and humanity in a richer way. One does not need to craft a novel to enjoy this benefit. Just a few hours spent writing can carry one a long way along the path toward resolution.
In this workshop we will explore our pasts with pens (or laptops, for those who prefer.) Letters to those who hurt us, or to our childhood selves, and stories written from our past can all bring our hearts and minds together in healing from early disappointments. In a safe, nurturing environment, we will explore writing exercises, and share (as comfortable) our stories. We will find greater understanding of the impact of past traumas, and take steps toward feeling better.
This is not a creative writing workshop, but a space for growth. We will not be critiquing each other's work, but gently exploring our lives and hurts. We will go only as deep as we feel ready, and use writing to tenderly investigate a few of the historical misadventures that interfere with our current wellness. With new understanding, we can transform past injuries into future strength.
